The Scholarship
The Dr. Joakim Peter Memorial Scholarship provides funding to an emerging leader from the COFA community pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees at an accredited college or university who exemplify the life and values of community service of Dr. Joakim Peter.
Benefits & Services
The scholarship recipients become part of the A+JOJO Scholars Program which provides them with some financial support, leadership development, career development for college success and beyond. A+JOJO is grounded in the Chuukese word, achocho (pronounced ah-joe-joe) which means resiliency, toughness, persistence, or hard work. It incorporates academic excellence (A+) and the name (JOJO) of our friend and mentor the late Dr. Joakim Peter who lived and modeled for us resiliency, toughness, persistence, and hard work in the work of social justice.
Ideal Candidate
We seek applicants who exemplify the life and values of Dr. Joakim Peter in resiliency, hard work, leadership, dedication to social justice, and commitment to advocating for the well-being of the COFA community. A+Jojo Scholars should have a proven commitment to community service, advocacy, and human rights issues. You may demonstrate this by sharing your past and current work or by sharing your future hopes and dreams on the application form essay.
Eligibility
COFA citizen or US-born of parents from FSM, Marshall Islands, or Palau (COFA nations)
Accepted to or enrolled in an accredited university or community college (high school seniors can apply if accepted to a college)
Any field of studies.
Leadership experience in supporting the COFA community at home or abroad.
Willingness to participate in the A+JOJO Scholars Program activities as developed by the A+JOJO Team in partnership with colleges and universities. Such activities may include but not limited to new student orientations, bridge program, internships, tutoring, community service, and leadership development training.
